چکیده

In this study, statistical and fractal texture analysis was used to assess the ability of 30MHz Intravascular Ultrasound (IVUS) data, in raw and scan-converted form, to characterise atherosclerotic plaque. Data from 3 different plaque groups was assessed in the study, these were, loose fibrotic tissue (LFT), dense fibrotic tissue (DFT) and calcium (CA). The composition of each group was verified from histo-pathological analysis, providing a Gold Standard from which results were verified. Scan-converted images were used to locate 33 regions of interest (ROI) within areas of known tissue composition. Fractal and Statistical textural features were computed on ROI data in raw and scan-converted form. The results show the ability of the method to discriminate between groups, but in particular, they highlight the advantage of using the raw data over the scan-converted data to assess coronary artery disease.

Speckle Noise Reduction and Edge-Enhancement of Coronary Plaque Tissue in Intravascular Ultrasound Image by Using Anisotropic Diffusion Filter

This paper describes a novel edge-preserved smoothing method with special consideration to an intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) image. An IVUS image, which is commonly used for a diagnosis of acute coronary syndromes (ACS), is very grainy due to heavy speckle noise. The speckle noise prevents not only the medical doctors’ interpretation of the IVUS image, but also the processing of medical images...

Simulation Model of Intravascular Ultrasound Images

The extraction of quantitative information through Intravascular Ultrasound (IVUS) images is a very important goal for the diagnostic and the therapy in atherosclerotic vessels. The correct interpretation highly depends on what gray level values of the image mean, i.e understanding of IVUS image formation. In this project, we propose a simple physical model for simulating IVUS images, based on ...

Rigor and Reproducibility in Analysis of Vascular Calcification.

Clinical and preclinical studies of cardiovascular calcification often require interpretation of images from histopathology, computed tomography, intravascular ultrasound, and positron emission tomography. To avoid potential pitfalls in biological inferences, investigators should know what happens to data in image processing algorithms, the limitations of cross-sectional images in studying mech...

HoliMAb: A holistic approach for Media-Adventitia border detection in intravascular ultrasound

We present a fully automatic methodology for the detection of the Media-Adventitia border (MAb) in human coronary artery in Intravascular Ultrasound (IVUS) images. A robust border detection is achieved by means of a holistic interpretation of the detection problem where the target object, i.e. the media layer, is considered as part of the whole vessel in the image and all the relationships betw...

Histopathologic validation of angioscopy and intravascular ultrasound.

BACKGROUND To establish a histopathologic basis for angioscopic and ultrasound image interpretation we studied 70 postmortem human arterial segments in vitro. METHODS AND RESULTS We used 7- to 9-French fiber-optic angioscopes and 20- to 30-MHz intravascular ultrasound imaging catheters. Three observers assigned an angioscopic and ultrasound image classification to each vessel segment. The ima...

Edge-Preserved Smoothing Method with Special Reference to Intravascular Ultrasound Image Using Anisotropic Diffusion Filter Controlled by Weighted Separability Measure

This paper describes a novel edge-preserved smoothing method specialized for intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) image. In the proposed method, the processing of an anisotropic diffusion filter is controlled by the weighted separability of an IVUS image. The present method not only reduces a speckle noise but also enhances an edge on an IVUS image. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verifi...
